Pellegrino Artusi was born in Forlimpopoli, close to Forlì, on the 4th august 1820. after his studies at the seminary of Bertinoro, he starts taking care of his father’s business. The turning point in the life of Pellegrino and his family is the famous incursion in the small town carried out by “il Passatore”. The bandit and his gang enter Artusi’s home, and beside stealing valuables, one of them harasses the sister of the famous gastronomist. The poor girl is left in a state of shock that will lead her to the internment in an asylum. The robbery is a blow for the family both from an economical and personal point of view. They decide to move to Florence, where the 32-year Pellegrino commits to the commercial activity. His success is so large that he is able to retire and live off private income when he is only 45. In 1885 he publishes the first edition of “La Scienza della Cucina e l’Arte di Mangiare Bene” (the science of cuisine and the art of eating well), the cooking handbook destined to became a huge literary success and that will be soon known as “l’Artusi”. Pellegrino keeps living in Tuscany but preserves the relation with his hometown until his death on 30th march 1911
